Michele Simms-Burton

Join us for an online discussion about Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist Toni Morrison, featuring Michele Simms-Burton, a scholar and founding board member of the Toni Morrison Society, facilitated by Michon Boston, a journalist, producer and published playwright, and including a Q&A with attendees.

Michele will discuss Toni Morrison’s life, career and the significance of her work, including her 1987 groundbreaking book Beloved, which is based on the true life story of Margaret Garner – an enslaved woman who escaped from a Kentucky plantation with her husband and four children. Faced with being captured, Margaret does the unimaginable – she kills her daughter rather than allowing her to return to the horrors of slavery.

In addition to servig on the board on the Toni Morrison Society, Michele L. Simms-Burton is a retired university professor of American literature and African American studies, writer, and photographer. She continues to lecture throughout the world about topics pertaining to African American culture. She is based in metro DC.
