Welcome to the "Support Indie Summer" Reading Challenge for children K-12! We are featuring picture book, middle grade, and young adult authors from Maryland Writers' Association and the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators.  Scroll down to see the challenge books and their authors/illustrators, and to find links to Youtube readings, author websites, activity sheets, etc.!

To play along and enter to win a stack of books from the challenge, you just need to earn ten points and then visit http://bit.ly/MWASIS21 by August 31, 2021 to enter the drawing.  One reader will win all of the challenge picture books, one reader will win all of the middle grade books, and one reader will win all of the young adult books!  Only one entry per reader, but multiple readers in a household can enter. The drawing will take place in early September.  

Ways to earn points  - You can mix and match. You don't have to do each activity.  Look for a checkmark ✔️ next to an author's point-earning activities.  Book reviews and social media posts earn points for all authors.

  •   ✔️ Read a book from the challenge (one point per book!) - some are available in paperback, hardback, and/or e-book, and a few are in libraries 
  •   ✔️ Watch a reading or trailer of a book in the challenge (one point per video!)
  •   ✔️ Leave a book review on Goodreads or Amazon after reading a book (one point per review!) - if a full reading is online, this counts as reading it!
  •   ✔️ Post to social media of your choice about the challenge! (one point per post!) - tell everyone you're doing the challenge or reading one of the books! You can tag the challenge #SupportIndieSummer and/or the author (their social media handles can be found under their bios), and/or @marylandwriters!
  •   ✔️ Do a challenge activity sheet! (one point per sheet!)

About the author: Mrs. Evelyn Davis retired after teaching students for over 33 years. Although she was no longer in the classroom, her desire to connect with children remained strong. About the author: Emily is a part-time writer/artist, full-time Environmental Scientist, and full-time mom. She loves to create in many mediums, and has been inspired by her young daughter, and her loving, supportive, and creative family. She also pulls inspiration from her life in Maryland, and from focusing on the tiniest of details anywhere she visits. Her favorite local destinations are Pennsylvania, Maine, and North Carolina. Beach Dreaming is Emily's first book, and she has more wonderful creations on the way.

From the author: The book was inspired by watercolor landscapes painted by my grandmother in the 1940s. I wrote the story and painted gouache animals that I superimposed over the watercolors. It means the world to me that I could create this book for my daughter, and in memory of my grandmother.
