Prince George's Chapter - When Poets Dance With Words

June 12, 2021
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Prince George's County Chapter Zoom Meeting

Sistah Joy will moderate a virtual open forum with poet and author, Diane Wilbon Parks sharing and discussing poetry, sharing insights about crafting poems, embracing inspiration sources, and various approaches to writing and presenting poetry. The host-moderators will invite event attendees, poets and non-poets alike, to engage in a “focused poetry excursion,” employing an open exchange of literary ideas, a variety of poetry forms and samples, while sharing Classic and contemporary poems, including original poems by the host-moderators. Poems will also be examined to discover their literary and cultural foundations.

Discussions will include questions about the responsibility of poets as historians and griots, and also as change-agents. Topics such as assessing and/or awakening the social consciousness of an audience/community, while engaging the audience in dialogues about effective presentation styles, and historical and contemporary social issues will also be included. Live and recorded poetry presentations will be utilized to allow a variety of poetic methods to engage audiences. Attendees will be invited to present and discuss poems intermittently, as time permits.

J. Joy "Sistah Joy" Matthews Alford is the inaugural Poet Laureate of Prince George's County, Maryland. She is the Founder of the socially-conscious poetry ensemble, Collective Voices. Several of her works have been anthologized, most recently in response to the coronavirus pandemic, “Singing In The Dark – A Global Anthology of Poetry Under Lockdown.” (2021).

Diane Wilbon Parks is a visual poet and artist, who has written two poetry collections and a Children’s Book. She loves painting words with imagery, personifications, metaphors, similes and uses these techniques throughout her body of work. She is the founder of The Write Blend, a culturally diverse poetry circle, and has been recognized as a 2020 Prince George’s County Poet of Excellence.
