You’ve typed “the end” on your manuscript…now what? From a macro-level view, there are three options for getting your work published. This is a generalization, of course, but after “the end” an author can choose self-publishing, small press publishing or traditional publishing (also known as Big 5 publishing). As a literary agent, my job is to make money for my clients and that starts when we ink a book deal with a Big 5 publisher.

So, let’s go behind the scenes and talk about the business of publishing. What are today’s pros and cons of self-publishing, small press publishing and traditional publishing? If you, the author, choose to pursue traditional publishing, how do you do it? What does a literary agent do and do you need one? How do you find legitimate literary agents and how do you submit your manuscript to them? Most agents ask for a query letter – what is this and how do you increase your chances of successfully attracting an agent with yours. What are agents and publishers looking for in 2021? Finally, again from a macro-level view, how do you strategize for profit for your own personal author career? We’ll discuss these topics and leave plenty of time for Q&A.

Sara Megibow is a literary agent with kt literary out of Highlands Ranch, CO and is actively acquiring.
