North Baltimore Chapter: On the Line

February 25, 2021
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

North Baltimore Chapter Zoom Meeting

That the line does work in meaning, rhythm, beauty, and complexity—apart from and sometimes in contradiction to the sentence that holds it—is one of the great pleasures of poetry. Toward this study, Leslie Shiel will examine several contemporary poems where line is crucial to meaning and nuance. She'll give some instruction and many writing prompts, offering participants the opportunity to leave the session with the starts of new work. Those who write mostly in other genres may find it helpful to become "beginners" again—returning to their stories, essays, or plays with a new perception that helps them untangle a problem in a current writing project.

Leslie Shiel is the author of two chapbooks, Self-Portrait as a New Name and Braided (both from Finishing Line Press). Her poems have been published in Crab Orchard Review, The Southern Review, Nimrod, Poetry International, The Sun, and other publications. She teaches Poetry Writing, Nature Writing, and Medicine in Literature at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she was awarded the 2014 College of Humanities and Sciences Distinguished Adjunct Award, and Advanced Poetry Writing at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, where she received the 2014 Master Teacher Award.
