Baltimore storyteller, Rafael Alvarez, will inspire and humor as he shares the lessons he has learned over his exciting writing career that took him from Baltimore to Hollywood and back. He will also share his pearls of wisdom to help unstick us where we might be struggling in our writing, and spend time responding to questions.

A Baltimore native, Rafael Alvarez worked in the circulation department of The Baltimore Sun as a teenager, and then made his way to the City Desk covering crime and working the obit desk. He was known as the reporter who wrote about the extraordinary lives of ordinary Baltimoreans. From The Sun, Alvarez went to work on merchant ships, and wrote for the HBO drama, The Wire, along with other NBC dramas.

Two anthologies of Alvarez's newspaper work have been published: Hometown Boy and Storyteller. A third collection of his essays, Crabtown, USA, was released in 2015.  Alvarez returned to his primary muse—the Queen City of the Patapsco—to continue writing fiction about Orlo and Leini and his on-going memoirs about a rough-and-tumble port town he calls The Holy Land.
