The Research Process with Lois Szymanski

Author Lois Szymanski will join us at the Finksburg Library to talk about the importance of research when writing both fiction and nonfiction. Whether the research is for simple background when setting a scene or for detailed facts about a location or an era that will play an important part in the written piece, it is crucial to present accurate specifics. Szymanski will share her process, walking participants through the creation of several of her stories and the steps she took to find and verify information, and she’ll speak of the impact those details have had on her readers.

Szymanski has authored 29 books for children including a series of novels for children called ‘The Gettysburg Ghost Gang” that she wrote with co-author Shelley Sykes. Many of Szymanski’s books are about the wild ponies who reside on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. For over 30 years she’s researched these ponies and their habitat. She is a former Regional Advisor for the MD/DE/WV chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a correspondent for the Carroll County Times
