Carroll County Chapter - August Mtg - Writing Novels for Children

August 10, 2019
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Finksburg Branch Library
2265 Old Westminster Pike
Finksburg, MD 21048

Join award-winning middle grade novelist Laura Shovan for an overview of the children’s novel market. We will focus on the difference between middle grade and young adult books, popular genres for kids, and how writing for children and teens does and does not differ from writing for adults. Bring your questions and a pitch to share.

Laura Shovan is former editor of the literary journal Little Patuxent Review. Her chapbook, Mountain, Log, Salt and Stone, won the inaugural Harriss Poetry Prize. Laura edited the Maryland Writers’ Association anthology Life in Me Like Grass on Fire: Love Poems and co-edited Voices Fly: An Anthology of Exercises and Poems from the Maryland State Arts Council Artists-in-Residence Program, for which she is a longtime teacher. The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary, Laura’s novel-in-verse for children, won many honors including the Cybils Award for poetry, NCTE Notable Verse Novel, a Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year, and the ILA-CBC Children’s Choice Reading List. Her middle grade novel Takedown was selected by Junior Library Guild, PJ Our Way, and was on the American Library Association’s Amelia Bloomer List of feminist books for children. A Place at the Table, co-written with author/activist Saadia Faruqi, will be published in 2020.
