MWA chapter meetings are open to the public and are free to MWA members and first-time guests. Returning non-members will be asked to pay $5. Non-members wishing to join MWA may do so at meetings or here.

Author and former newspaper reporter Michael Downs will give the presentation. He is an associate professor of English at Towson University who lives and writes in Baltimore.

His most recent book is the novel, The Strange and True Tale
of Horace Wells, Surgeon Dentist, about the historical figure oft-credited with discovering anesthesia. He also published The Greatest Show: Stories inspired by a 1944 circus fire, and House of Good Hope: A Promise for a Broken City, which won the River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Prize. All three books are set in his hometown of Hartford, Connecticut.

Among his awards are fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.
