The “Over in a Flash—Writing Short Short Fiction for Publication” session will provide an overview of the various very short forms published in contemporary literary journals. Characteristics of the form and examples from The Best Small Fictions 2017 will be discussed. Attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in hands-on exercises, such as brainstorming ideas in response to a visual prompt, generating first sentences that capture the reader’s attention, and writing a complete 5-minute fiction. The session content and suggested markets for short short fiction will be included in a handout, and attendees should leave with a better sense of striking short short forms as well as some raw material to refine at home or wherever they find inspiration.
